By Thomas Williams, Director, PLANit Sarasota
PLANit Sarasota, is comprised of a cross-sector group of education partners (K-12 and higher ed), youth services organizations and community partners focused on increasing the rate of students who pursue an education beyond high school, particularly among those historically underrepresented in higher education.
The Education Foundation of Sarasota County’s strategic focus on its College, Career and Life Readiness (CCLR) Initiative, which emphasizes preparing students successfully to get to and through a postsecondary degree or credential and aligns with PLANit Sarasota’s shared multi-sector goals. In fall 2018, the Education Foundation agreed to serve as the backbone organization for PLANit Sarasota.
As such, PLANit Sarasota brings together like-minded organizations to collaborate in four workgroups covering financial aid, having a plan after graduation, career explorations, and persistence. Cheryl Mendelson, CEO of the Van Wezel Foundation, will be participating in the career exploration work group, providing insights and strategies to help students succeed.
Being a partner means lending your voice where possible, leaning in and being willing to work collaboratively to help lift up the students in our community. It’s a tangible investment in the next generation of leaders where we can collectively work together to improve lives and strengthen our community for generations to come. We believe Cheryl’s previous experience serving as a national peer mentor for the John F. Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. and her executive leadership experience across the arts and culture, education and health care, will help catapult the mission of PLANit Sarasota and support the students we serve.
